Camille argues that the hundreds of monstrous figures, projecting from three levels of the building's façade and towers, cannot be studied in isolation, but are intimately connected to the rich cultural character of the nineteenth century. Michael Camille's (1958-2002) extraordinary book, published posthumously, is the first comprehensive study of these legendary monsters, which were part of the cathedral's restoration campaign of 1843-1864.
